My Rating System
Anime Relations: Otaku no Video
Everyone seems eager to clarify their own rating system for their lists and it does seem useful to see exactly what some means by their scores so I'll do it too.
The first thing to point out that I rank shows based on how good they are, which for some reason is not a universally accepted format. Do not even mention the word bias, it is not relevant here.
The only way to measure a value is too compare it to other things. To measure distance we compare it to set distances we've agreed on like an "inch" or a "mile". Since we have a 1-dimensional scale to use here we can simply just compare each anime to each other, therefore creating a ranking, listing every anime from worst to least. This is the first step in the process. Then is the problem of where to draw the lines for each number. The two schools of thought in this field are the uniformers and the gaussians. The uniformers are wrong.
My rating distribution is based on Gaussian percentiles, so it is relative to itself rather than arbitrary values that can never translate between individuals. Imagine a Gaussian (or normal) distribution with a variance of Euler's constant (which I denote as exp(1) ) and mean of 5. This would create a continuous distribution from which a discrete one can be built to serve as a perfect model for the distribution of my scoring.
So using the formula:
perfectFreq(score) = 100*(1/(exp(1)*sqrt(2*pi)))*exp(1)^(-0.5*((score-5)/exp(1))^2)
we can easily discern the target frequency of each score by plugging in the range [1..10]. This produces the result perfect percentage distribution of:
In layman's, this is the probability of me giving each entry each corresponding score.
Now one thing to note here is that the distribution does not seemed to be aligned perfectly with the scores (despite being averaged at 5, seemingly the average). Due to MAL's system there is no 0, and so to get a perfect normal over the whole score set you must use an average of 5.5. This is what I had originally used but I lately have changed my position on this, the zeroing issue. Instead I use an average of 5, giving a equal distribution from scores 1-9, but leaving 10 as a special category. While the frequency of 10/10 scores is in line with the above described Gaussian distribution, it makes it ever so more special by making it less common in this way, and most of all it lined up with what I thought felt right.
If you map out my current scores (at any moment in time) they will of course not line up perfectly with my preferred distribution, because I do not adjust my entire system every time I score a new anime. However these are the rules I attempt to keep to to build a better future for MAL and it's abysmal scoring system.
I would implore anyone who read this far to use the same system, it's the only one that truly works.

- 5.34% - (Genshiken Nidaime, Pupa, Sekkou Boys)

- 14.73% - (Full Metal Panic, Gunsmith Cats, Teekyuu)
- 12.02% - (Diebuster, Midori Days, Gosick)
- 8.57% - (Maid Dragon, GJ Club, Macross F)
- 5.34% - (Ashita wa Joe, Keion, Sailor Moon)
- 2.90% - (Aria, Nausicaa, Zeta Gundam)
