R Larry Overstreet
A graduate of Bob Jones University (B.A.), San Francisco Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Wayne State University (M.A., Ph.D.), Dr. Overstreet has been in full-time Christian service since 1968, both in pastoral ministry and in Christian education. He “retired” July 1, 2008, from his position as Director of the Doctor of Ministry program and Professor of Pastoral Theology at Corban University School of Ministry (formerly Northwest Baptist Seminary), Tacoma, WA. He also taught at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary, Grace Theological Seminary and Clearwater Christian College. He pastored churches in Michigan and Indiana for 18 years.
Dr. Overstreet is married to Linda, his best friend and confidante. They have three adult children, two daughters and a son, ten grandchildren, nine of whom are girls, and seven great-grandchldren. He presently devotes his energies to ministering in local churches, teaching as an adjunct professor, and writing.
A former skydiver and motorcycler, Dr. Overstreet now limits his hobby activity to jogging and maintaining the yard. He is the author of Biographical Preaching: Bringing Bible Characters to Life (Kregel, 2001), and Persuasive Preaching: A Biblical and Practical Guide to the Effective Use of Persuasion (Lexham Publishers, 2014). He has written over 160 articles in various scholarly journals and magazines, made numerous contributions to Sunday School materials, and has spoken at various retreats, seminars, camps, Bible conferences, and on several mission fields. His commitment is always to the local Bible believing church and its growth in the grace and knowledge of our Savior Jesus Christ.
As a former pastor and as a professor of future pastors, Dr. Overstreet firmly believes in the verbal inspiration and full authority of the Word of God, and the desperate need in our day for its truths to be presented clearly and persuasively. He desires to help individual believers and Christian families have their lives solidly established on the principles of God's Word.
In addition to his preaching and teaching ministries, Dr. Overstreet formerly presented sermon-length, first person dramatic monologues. Dressed in biblical costume, he "became" a biblical character (for example, Lot, Solomon, Pontius Pilate, John Mark, etc.), and powerfully shared the life and lessons of that person with the contemporary audience.
