Historically, the human society and water-related ecosystems have been always faced with adverse ... more Historically, the human society and water-related ecosystems have been always faced with adverse effects of climate changes and challenges related to Sustainable water resource management (SWRM) having too little, or too much water. According to the contemporary scientific data, there is a strong evidence for increases in some extreme hydrological events globally, such as heavy precipitations or extreme droughts. Because of their potential for substantial impacts on people, infrastructure and environment, extreme hydrological events are of interest to scientist and other professionals worldwide. Due to the increasingly frequent occurrence of these extremes in Europe, as well as in the Republic of Serbia, it is necessary to have more detailed research on whether, where and how will the hydrological extreme events affect all the entities and users of water resources. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to emphasize the causal link between the extreme hydrological phenomena and SWRM, primarily in a relation to the basic services regulation functions like water supply. In order to define the risk of a selected area, i.e. estimate the level of uncertainty, a specific research method has been used. The application has been made for the theory of risk with the combination of multi-criteria decision making. The main contribution of the paper is a compilation of identified risks and impacts on water resources before, during and after extreme hydrological events.
