Prof. CSRK Prasad has obtained all his three engineering degrees from REC Warangal (presently NIT Warangal). He has 30 years of teaching and research experience, mostly at NIT Warangal. He taught several courses to both B.Tech. (Civil Engineering) and M.Tech. (Transportation Engineering) students apart from guiding 252 Dissertation works and 32 Project works. Transportation planning using specific integrated systems like Geographical Information Systems (GIS) gives more desirable results. Quantification of different connectivity indicators is the main intention of this work. Taking Hyderabad as an example, this study tried to illustrate the relevance of GIS in analysing the street structure connectivity. The road network connectivity in the city is evaluated using various indicators of connectivity. A higher value of the connectivity indicators means that the road network is connected much better. Based on the results obtained, the central zone has higher and the northern zone has lower connectivity. Improper management of roads may lead to the traffic congestions, high transportation cost as well as unnecessary traffic jams. In Visakhapatnam there is a problem in NAD Junction by burgeoning traffic at the intersection by causing traffic jams. This study helps to find out the suitability of two different traffic models to decrease in the traffic queues, waiting time at the signalized intersections. In order to reduce the waiting time, the PTV-VISSIM software is used for the models developed and the simulation results are compared in queue length, traveling time and speed. The data used in the simulation was collected by video recording, the traffic at the study area. Video based technique minimizes the human errors and overcomes the difficulties in gathering the traffic information.

TOD typology is a way grouping different TODs having a common set of features. The TOD typology will help local practitioners, decision-makers, and officials understand the assets and vulnerabilities, and how each transit station area fits within the regional context. No one-size-fits-all, like different implementation strategies, are needed for different place types. TOD typology offers a strategic planning of transportation combination with land use and enables comparisons and performance assessments within the station classes. Kabul is one of those cities which are sprawling for two decades and the implication is that residents are suffering from long travel time, pollution and energy consumption. In Kabul city, the number of users for public transport and walk are decreasing day by day and they are shifting to other alternatives. A detailed study to be made in understanding urban sprawl and urban compactness influences on choice mode. This paper is aimed to evaluate the impact of urban sprawl and urban compactness on travel demand for transport modes in 22 districts in Kabul city. Travel demand modeling by using the traditional four-step transportation forecasting model for the year 2017 has been applied to assess the current number of passengers for each transport mode (public transport, walk and private transport) in all 22 districts. Secondly, urban compactness based on metrics with two indicators, mixed-use and density measured to figure out the level of sprawl and compactness in each district. Finally, travel demand for transport modes in both circumstances (compact and sprawl areas) compared in observed districts. The extracted outcome presented an interesting vision of variation amongst districts in Kabul city. This study revealed a profound relationship between urban sprawl and travel demand for all urban transport modes.

Traffic Analysis Zone Level Road Traffic Accident Prediction Models Based on Land Use Characteristics

The present study investigates this relationship between road traffic accidents and land use characteristics for Cyberabad area of Hyderabad city. Generalized linear regression techniques are used for developing the relationship between different land use characteristics with the road traffic accidents. Total accidents and KSI (Killed and Severe Injury) accidents per year for each traffic analysis zone (TAZ) are taken as dependent variables whereas employment density and land use proportions for each TAZ are taken as independent variables. The correlation matrix developed between the independent variables showed a high degree of correlation between the population density with the residential area. The results from the generalized linear regression analysis show that the employment density, residential area, and road length are positively correlated with road traffic accidents whereas mixed land use is negatively correlated with road traffic accidents. It also found that mixed land use was also negatively correlated and road length is positively correlated to the KSI.

Efficient rural transportation depends largely on a well-knit road network to provide accessibility and mobility in rural areas. This work affords an applied method for the development of rural road networks in rural areas of developing countries. The proposed methodology enables to determine nodal points in the rural road network based on the facility index of the settlements. The rural road network is generated by connecting the nodal points by minimum travel time path in Geographical Information System (GIS). Spatial analysis is carried out in the study area to identify the Desirable Coverage Distance of the Facility(DCDF). With an intent of studying the negative upshot of fluctuating speeds of heterogeneous traffic on the environment, the current paper is the outcome of the research done on various highways located in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in India, with an objective of developing a comprehensive noise prediction model by taking into account the traffic and roadway factors. Quantified noise levels [Leq (dBA) and L10 (dBA)] revealed that for the traffic speed variation of 10 to 95 kmph, the traffic noise levels were significantly affected by the variations in the proportion of the vehicle. On a specific note, the proposed model can be effectively used for the highway traffic noise prediction especially for the heterogeneous traffic, as the difference between the measured and predicted noise levels are within 1 to 10 dB (A).
