📢 Announcement | Power2X & Advario develop large-scale e-SAF hub in Rotterdam   We are proud to announce that Power2X and Advario are developing a world-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels in the Port of Rotterdam. The Power2X production facility will have the capacity to produce over 250,000 tonnes/year of e-SAF, a non-fossil, synthetic fuel made from green hydrogen. It will be the largest e-SAF facility announced to-date. Building on the current global grey value chain, ammonia offers a 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗛𝗚-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 hydrogen transport alternative option to achieve imports. Through clever optimization, while 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗜, the cost penalty of cracking can be driven down as low as 5% of value chain costs. Key concepts to work out in detail are heat integration, 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿-𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and economies of scale, addressing the cost share of cracking that unaddressed could be as high as 20% of value chain costs. Dare we even dream of 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 in this context? 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗴𝗮-𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 centralized and backbone dependent end-state, we should consider more 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 to kick-start the ammonia cracking economy. Downstream transport of ammonia by rail or truck can unlock decentralized cracking before infrastructure emerges, or provide solutions for those sectors where backbones are not planned. It does come at an LCOH increase compared to the optimal giga-scale end-state, but is it worth it? She recently led the Future Fuels team at A.P. Moller - Maersk driving the decarbonisation strategy for the company’s fleet of 700+ vessels. She also served 3 years as Advisory Board Member at DTU - Technical University of Denmark and was recently re-elected to serve as member for yet another period – now in her capacity as Independent Consultant advising the board and president at DTU.   In her role as part-time Special Advisor at Power2X Maria will closely work with both our project development and consulting teams in developing new low-carbon business opportunities for the company and our clients.   The maritime sector is working hard on its lower carbon ambitions, with leading companies already showcasing the potential. Ricardo is a Managing Director in the Sustainable Energies Group at CPP Investments | Investissements RPC where he leads the team that manages the Fund’s energy transition investment activities in Europe. Ricardo joined CPP Investments in 2020 in the Direct Private Equity team focused on large cap buyout investments in Europe before taking the role of Head of Sustainable Energies Group Europe. He has extensive experience leading investments in both large scale businesses as well as platform scale-ups. Prior to joining CPP Investments, Ricardo was a Partner at Palamon Capital Partners, a mid-market private equity fund manager. I had the opportunity to spend the last two days at Investing in Green Hydrogen 2024 in London alongside my colleagues Jonathan Carpenter and Peter Daemen. It was fantastic to speak with many people active in our sector and to be part of a lively panel discussion on financing the hydrogen revolution. Also we were honoured to receive the Impact Green Hydrogen Project of the Year.   “Gearing up” is how I would describe the overall sentiment at the conference. There is real confidence in the market – just look at the number of FIDs taken over the summer. Supply chains are ramping up, and project developers are getting better at picking out the business cases that make the most sense. That’s not to say that developing the hydrogen sector is simple or straightforward. These are incredibly complex projects that require collaboration and commitment by many. And, like every capital intensive sector, they require a stable and predictable regulatory environment. Two things I would like to see the industry double down on in the coming months and years are (1) safety and (2) cost leadership. These projects and assets will require constant vigilance to ensure no harm. At the same time, while everyone wants to find the "green premium" in the market today, the industry will only really scale up at pace when it offers the lowest-cost way to decarbonize heavy industry, aviation, and shipping - which will require a near-religious devotion to driving cost out every single day.
