Modern Board Game Teen Birthday

My daughter had a modern board game party for her 14th birthday. These games are fast, fun, easy to learn, and light years away from Clue or Monopoly. They also vary from utterly random to totally luck based and creative to deductive, giving everyone a chance to shine and very little chance to get bored. We rented a room at a local game cafe, provided snacks and ice cream cake, and just let the kids cycle through the stack. Other than the ice breaker, the party mostly ran itself.

Review: Spyfall
Spyfall - the kids were so busy with One Night, Playtested, and Zombie Dice, they didn't get to this one, but it's a lot of fun and works well with larger groups.
Codenames: Pictures, a smarter party game - Geek.com
Codenames Pictures - another one we didn't actually get to, but still a fun, quick moving party game that works well with large groups and emphasizes deduction and creativity. Honestly, I don't know if the six 14 - 15 year old girls in the group would have calmed down enough to be able to play, though.

Magnetic Travel Games - a throwback party favor

Mini Bright Magic Cubes - another throwback party favor. Even though they were pastel, the guys played with them, too.
We Didn't Playtest This at All
We Didn't Playtest This at All. One of the most random games I've ever seen - the goal is to "win the game" and (depending on the cards) you can easily all win or lose the first round. But my daughter loves it and her friends thought it was hilarious. It was quick enough to keep their attention and the older teens and guys liked it, too.
Telestrations: 12 Player Party Pack
Telestrations: 12 Player Party Pack - It's like the old game Telephone, but + Illustrations (hence the titular portmanteau). It's nice because *everyone* is either drawing or writing on a new notebook every turn. Part of the fun is the bizarre results you get after the original word has been manhandled by 8 - 12 people.

While this is a little young, it's a great ice breaker - especially if all the kids don't know each other. (The cards are a *really* tight fit, though, so be sure to put the cards in ahead of time and/or use a thin butter knife to stretch the opening wider.) The girls loved it - you could easily DIY this and make it work for older teens/guys too cool for unicorns.

These are so much fun to use with Zombie Dice - you can just have a bin or two of them to grab from to help you keep score. If you want, you can also send them home as party favors.
Zombie Dice
Zombie Dice - Yes, the cup has a gross looking zombie, but the game is fast and easy to learn. It's a press your luck dice game where you try to maximize brains while minimizing shotgun blasts. We combined it with pastel eraser brains to keep score and played while eating birthday cake. With 12 kids, we really should have had a second cup. Especially popular with the guys.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf - the first game my kids fell in love with. A modern variant of deduction games like Werewolf or Mafia, but well under 10 minutes around. Everyone is assigned a card, goes through a round of role specific play, and then tries to guess who the werewolves are and/or convince everyone that it isn't you. Since the role specific play round is scripted ("Werewolves wake up!") it's pretty self explanatory. The free app that reads it out loud for you is even easier.
