The Merovingian kingdom represents just a blip in European history. Despite a reign of just a few hundred years (468-751 AD), jewelry from the period is stunning and often combines the best of Roman and Anglo-Saxon traditions. Heres a late Merovingian finger ring. Granulated gold band with carved carnelian center which depicts a grazing horse. 8th century AD via Sotheby’s.
Dorset Amethyst & Pearl Earrings
We craft all our jewelry the old fashioned way - by hand. Two freshwater pearls gracefully complement a single hand-cut amethyst. All stones are bezel-mounted in a 24k gold over sterling silver setting. Hinged backs for pierced ears. Size: 1 Inch.
Viking Open Ring Brooch
Viking style open ring (penannular) brooch. This is a reproduction of a late 10th century artifact which was discovered as part of the Lille Karleby hoard. I've dulled the pin a bit to make more safe for modern wear, but otherwise have stuck to the original design. Penannular brooches feature a pin which rotates around a large ring, they open and close through a small break in the ring. They would have been used in antiquity to fasten kilts and cloaks.
World Museum
