National Portrait Gallery Exhibits Tudor And Jacobean Portraits
It was common for unmarried women of Tudor times to wear very low-cut bodices. Married women added a partlet, for modesty's sake. Note the Ruff. This fashion accessory started as a high frilled collar in the fashion of the Middle Ages. It grew larger and more exaggerated later.
