You can adjust the number to adjust your stitch length. 1.5mm - 2mm is perfect for very light fabrics such as chiffon, voile and silk. Using a shorter stitch length helps prevent puckering. 2.5mm - 3mm is your go-to length for most mid-weight fabrics. 3.5mm is a great topstitching length. 4mm is for basting. The longer stitch length makes it easier to remove the stitches when no longer needed. Remember, these are guidelines, not laws! They are a great place to start but the sewing police are not going to turn up if you feel your topstitching would look better at 3mm or you want to sew your seams using 2mm. You’re the boss! 5.4K views · 556 reactions | Quick Sewing Tip ✂️ What to do when your fabric is getting pushed below the throat plate Often when I’m sewing with knit fabrics or thin fabric, it will get pushed down below the throat plate at the beginning of a seam. To prevent this, slide a small piece of tissue paper or tracing paper under the fabric. Make sure the paper extends beyond the fabric and covers the feed dogs and that the paper is under the fabric for about 1/2 an inch. The paper stabilizes the fabric and gives the feed dogs something to grip onto and move at the beginning of the seam. After you’ve sewn the seam, gently tear the paper away. Bonus! One piece of paper can be used multiple times. ✂️ Let me know in the comments your favorite sewing knits tip and make sure to follow me for more sewing tips and tutorials. 🧵 If you’re new around here, my name is Beth and I’ve been sewing garments for 30 years. 66K views · 5.7K reactions | Adjusting the upper thread tension is crucial for achieving the right stitch quality for different fabrics and techniques. The upper thread tension controls how tightly the upper thread is pulled as it interacts with the lower bobbin thread. Here’s an overview of different upper thread tension settings, what they’re used for, and why they’re important: 1. Tension Setting: 1–2 (Low Tension) Use For: Lightweight and delicate fabrics such as silk, chiffon, organza, tulle, and fine lace. Why: These fabrics can easily pucker or be distorted by high tension. A low tension setting allows the upper thread to flow smoothly, reducing the risk of fabric damage or uneven stitching. 2. Tension Setting: 3–4 (Moderate Tension) Use For: Medium-weight fabrics like cotton, polyester blends, linen, and rayon. Why: Moderate tension is the most common setting for everyday sewing. It balances the stitch, ensuring that the upper thread and the bobbin thread lock evenly between the fabric layers without pulling too tight or being too loose. 3. Tension Setting: 5–6 (High Tension) Use For: Heavyweight fabrics such as denim, canvas, wool, or when sewing multiple layers. Why: High tension is needed to pull the upper thread taut enough to create even stitches through thick or dense materials. Without enough tension, the stitches might be too loose, leading to loops or weak seams. 4. Tension Setting: 7–9 (Very High Tension) Use For: Specialty fabrics or specific techniques like sewing thick quilts, leather, or upholstery, and for certain decorative stitches that require tight, pronounced thread loops. Why: Very high tension helps the upper thread form tight, secure stitches that can penetrate and hold together very thick materials or multiple layers, ensuring durability. Be aware that the above isn’t always the rule. Indeed there are different factors that may affect the tension (type of thread, needle, stitch, etc.). So, when adjusting tension, it’s essential to test your settings on a scrap piece of fabric before starting your actual project. Hope it’s helpful, follow for more! 🌻 . . . | ALfonso MAria NAva | ALMANA | Wearable Art | Isaintjames · La Vida
