IEP Adaptive Goals for Preschoolers?
When I think of adaptive goals, I think of goals that help a student navigate their environment more independently and are not necessarily related to motor skills, cognitive skills, or emotional skills. Adaptive skills are more self-care like dressing, eating, grooming, and toileting, imitation (such an important early childhood skill!), following routines in the environment, and classroom skills like task completion and cutting and gluing. Function of Behavior
It's important to consider the function of behavior when attempting to reduce challenging behavior. Think about the WHY. Then think about a replacement behavior to TEACH. When thinking about what new behavior I want to teach the student, I’ll keep this in mind: 1) it must be something the student can ALREADY do (or at least be taught to do easily), 2) it must be something that can be taught and used in their current ENVIRONMENT, and 3) it must meet the SAME NEED as the challenging behavior.
