On May 13, 1981, Turkish sniper Mehmet Ali Ağca shot Pope John Paul II as he rode in an open car in Vatican City. He was hit in the abdomen, left hand and right arm and suffered major blood loss, which required five hours of surgery. Despite being sentenced to life in prison, after the Pope requested Ağca's pardon, he was released in 2010 after spending 29 years behind bars, then declaring himself "a messenger of God." Lucky for those of us who never had the chance to see it, Swiss photographer Willy Spiller was there, and the dark and atmospheric series of vintage photos he took has now come to be known as Hell On Wheels.
