I cannot stress the importance of paying attention in language classes in high school. Maybe the reason why your English teacher taught you about unreliable narrators is because a lot of the media around you is written by unreliable narrators posing as reliable. Maybe they gave you assignments on interpreting texts so you could draw your own conclusions about news articles. Some of you clearly thought English classes were useless in high school and now are unable to engage critically with media.

I’m a 4th year biochemistry student and the amount of STEM students I know with low language literacy is truly concerning. Why can you do calculus but not write a basic essay? How is your understanding of quantum mechanics better than your ability to make a coherent argument? How are you months away from an engineering degree without having read a book from start to finish since childhood? There is no field of study that spares you from literacy. No matter what you do, your competence in any field will only suffer by having low reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

I can instantly tell when someone in one of my STEM classes didn’t pay attention in English class in high school because they can’t read scientific articles without feeding them through ChatGPT. You do know that if you’re a biochemistry major, you have to both write and read scientific articles, right? And that people will consider you completely incompetent if you can’t do these things?

As a scientist you NEED to be able to express your ideas in a clear, understandable manner. Your scientific papers will get dissected in every possible way for fallacies and you need to be able to defend them. You need to know introduction-evidence-conclusion structure. You need to know what fallacies are in the first place. Being a scientist who can’t read or write critically is like being an architect that can’t draw.

actually the craziest impact animorphs has had on me is that i never really got an urge to eat cinnamon buns from reading them BUT the phrase “the refreshing beverage known as vinegar” has forced its way into my head every other week for years to try and convince me it would be a good idea to chug a whole glass of it

tyhe voices in my head are gettinh louder

Vinegar is what we used to use as the acid in our sodas before we switched to Carbonated Water in the 19th century, and vinegar-based sodas trace their roots all the way back to the Bronze Age Meditteranean! The Romans called it Posca! The Ottomans adopted it from the Romans and called it Sharab, which means “Drink”, and then American colonists acquired the recipe from the Ottomans in the 17th century and changed the name to Shrub!

There’s a famous example of Posca that most people misremember because we don’t drink Vinegar much anymore. If you’re familiar with the Crucifixion of Jesus in the Bible, you probably remember the bit about the Roman soldier offering Jesus a sponge full of vinegar to drink. Most people think the Roman dude was mocking Jesus, but that’s wrong. That was a sponge full of Posca. The Roman dude was like “Well this sucks. Want a Sprite?”

…Fun fact, I know this because the phrase “Refreshing Beverage known as Vinegar” got stuck in my head one night at work, and I started googling “Does anybody drink vinegar”. I had to know. It turns out the answer is yes! And you can still find vinegar-based soft drinks today! Switchel is a vinegar-and-ginger drink you can find at some bars in the US, and it goes back to pre-carbonated soft drinks.

Also, I know several people who drink pickle juice regularly, and white vinegar is a key component of pickle juice! So that’s also where vinegar as a drink can pop up in your day to day life.

There’s also a trendy New Age beverage called fire cider that’s literally just vinegar, cinnamon, spice, and pretensions. RIP Ax, you would’ve loved the fire cider craze.

op here. imagine how i feel. i’ve been dealing with this propaganda in my notifications all week.

@copperbadge i’m going to cross-wire this to your corner and see what happens.

oh yes – before I had surgery to fix the problem I used to get terrible headaches when my sinus passages would get inflamed and swell shut. Often the inflammation was from dehydration, and when it was I could drink posca and get some relief, since it rehydrates faster than plain water and takes the swelling down.

My recipe was a shot glass’s worth of vinegar, a spoonful of sugar, and a pinch of salt, then top off with 16-20 oz of water. Tastes kind of lemony, very nice.

modern art exhibit titled “I bet you won’t kill yourself” that is just a loaded gun on a podium in a museum

ahh okay!! get into it!! i’m thinking of a few similar contemporary conceptual art exhibits / performances! in different ways they all ask the question “what would you do with a loaded gun?”

Chris Burden “Shoot” (1971) - title really says it all, a performance piece where the artist had his friend shoot him. yeah. he was just hit in the arm, he lived. also see “Transfixed” where he like nailed himself to a car

Marina Ambramovic “Rhythm 0” (1974) - performance where the artist sat in a room with various objects (including a gun) let the audience do whatever they wanted to her. at some point one audience member was yelling at her and pointing it at her head and another audience member pulled him away. the vibes of this one make me think of Yoko Ono’s “Cut Piece” too bc of the vulnerability and the audiences eventual devolution into violence

Ed Keinholz “Still Live” (1974) - a loaded gun on a random timer set up in front of a chair and the audience could choose to sit in the chair knowing the gun could go off at any time

just some of the fascinating stuff that went on in the art world in the 70s
