This paper seeks to confirm Bentham‟s declaration that, among several sources for the principle o... more This paper seeks to confirm Bentham‟s declaration that, among several sources for the principle of utility, “I had it from Epicurus.” My method for confirming Bentham‟s self-identification with Epicurus, an ancient Greek philosopher (341 – 270 BCE), is to develop the similarities of the philosophical doctrines expressed in the texts of Epicurus and Bentham. The focus of this paper is narrow and the discussion is restricted to the works of Epicurus, excluding the Epicurean tradition and texts of later Epicureans.
