The swinging 60s changed the face of fashion. Clothes were cheaper and available to all. Hemlines went up higher than they had ever been before and teenagers led the way as fashion became less structured and less constricted.

Bonnie Cashin was an American sportswear designer well known for her numerous collaborations with famous manufacturers including Coach, for whom she designed the first line of women's products for in 1962. Cashin was also part of the "paper clothing" trend.

Hubert Givenchy helped define the 1960s style by dressing its most elegant actress, Audrey Hepburn, both on screen and off. Givenchy's designs were used in Hepburn movies such as Charade, Paris When it Sizzles, How to Steal a Million, and of course, Breakfast at Tiffany's, for which he designed the most famous "Little Black Dress."

Pucci was most recognized for his trademark colorful psychedelic prints. He also contributed to other '60s trends like the palazzo pant suit and headscarf.
Capri pants from the 50s were still popular in the 60s. By the middle of the decade bell bottoms replaced them. By the end of the decade as the hippie trend took over women wore bell-bottomed jeans.

Handbags came in a great variety in the 60s. Wet look material and PVC were used. Shoulder straps, clutches and small handles were all in fashion giving the ladies a variety.
The Ragman's Roost
The Newsboy hat is a typical 60s accessory. This was a soft peaked cap in leather or cloth. Another popular hat in the decade was the pill box hat. This small brimless hat was made popular by America’s first lady, Jackie Kennedy. This was a more conservative look.
The mini skirt may not have been so successful if it weren't for the invention of tights. Women wore these with patterns and in all colours. The colour American Tan was particularly popular.

In the photo is a pair of kitten heels and low-heeled sandals were popular. The footwear that everyone links to the sixties is of course flat boots. These became popular and eventually rose up the leg to the knee and were known as Go-go boots.

The famous Mary Quant mini skirt made its entrance in the 60s. Later in the decade the hippie style made long, flowing gypsy style skirts popular. Suede minis also put in an appearance towards the end of the decade.

The Chanel suit that had made its mark in the 50s. It had a fitted jacket to the hip and slim fitted skirt in tweed, remained popular in the 60s. Jackie Kennedy was a fan of this outfit and helped make it famous.
Toilet Paper Bridal Gown Part of Fashion, Pop Art Tradition
Paper dresses were a short lived fashion novelty. These dresses could have brightened up the pop art printed on them. They were made of a fabric called Dura Weve a cellulose material. However, they did not have a nice fitting and they were delicate so the trend died out after a short period of time.
In the 1960s coats became much shorter. In 1966 the growing awareness of Eastern culture brought about the popularity of Nehru jackets which came from India. Long maxi coats belted and lined with sheepskin appeared at the end of the decade.
