They offer practicable means to facilitate complex learning and (academic) enculturation. This study evaluates a free-of-charge short learning course (called ‘micro module’) for (aspirant) teachers and educationalists that introduces and promotes VC-use in present-day educational settings. Central to this short course were four one-hour VC-sessions that addressed (a) utility and usability issues and (b) topics related to (complex) learning and teaching in VC-environments. The sessions were distributed over a one-week period; each day both an afternoon and an evening version of a session were organized. Approximately 280 persons signed-up for the program. Between 5 and 10 percent of these subscribers took part in one or more VC-sessions. The recordings of the sessions were viewed around 160 times in total (count one month after the program ended). Relatively low numbers of participation and recording views question the return of investment of delivering a VC-rich short learning course. However, those participants who took part in the VC-sessions highly valued its content and structure (M=7.9; Mdn=8; Mode=9; ten-point scale). Especially the hands-on VC-experience was appreciated. Results further show that organizing non-compulsory VC-sessions at fixed moments leads to a low turnout in these sessions. High quality content doesn’t seem to affect that. Additional research is necessary to confirm these findings.

This study examined the effect of a user's WWW experience on both phases of the search process. Twenty-five students from two schools for Dutch preuniversity education were observed while performing three search tasks. The results indicate that subjects with WWW-experience are more proficient in locating Web sites than are novice WWW-users. The observed differences were ascribed to the experts' superior skills in operating Web search engines. However, on tasks that required subjects to locate information on specific Web sites, the performance of experienced and novice users was equivalent-a result that is in line with hypertext research. Based on these findings, implications for training and supporting students in searching for information on the WWW are identified. Finally, the role of the subjects' level of domain expertise is discussed and directions for future research are proposed.

In this study, we search for the social behaviour patterns which can act as a catalyst for professional development, with an explicit focus on student teachers' learning. Based on the 'Dimensions of Social Learning (DSL) Framework', including 4 dimensions and 11 indicators of social learning, the present study explores the social configuration of one network of primary teachers (n = 12), student teachers (n = 12) and teacher educators (n = 2). Two research questions guide this exploration: (1) What patterns of social behaviour in teacher networks are likely to lead to professional learning? (2) What network facilitation guidelines can be discerned to assist teachers and teacher educators wishing to optimise student teachers' professional development? Data collection consisted of video recordings, reflective notes and semi-structured interviews with network members. The findings paint a picture of how social learning in teacher networks is related to the group's social configuration. Observation criteria and student facilitation guidelines are suggested to support professional development within teacher networks. For each dimension in the DSL Framework, one point of attention is discerned to optimise students' learning in teacher networks.

It aimed at revealing information seeking activities necessary to execute present-day musical projects. A single case was studied in depth. First, a narrative interview was conducted to reveal project phases and corresponding information seeking behavior. Second, hereupon a semi-structured interview was taken to identify information seeking activities per phase. Results indicate that the musician deliberately searched for musical information especially in the first project phases. The internet was used as main source. Both data and goal driven strategies were applied, of which the latter were relatively scarce. This means that in this case the musician sporadically searched information based on a contemplated search plan. Future research should aim at generalizing findings. It should further validate the underlying analytical framework that proved to be useful for describing and categorizing musical information seeking behavior.

The inherent complexity of such games though, requires large efforts for their development. This paper presents a framework for serious game design, which aims to reduce the design complexity at both conceptual, technical and practical levels. The approach focuses on a relevant subset of serious games, labelled scenario-based games. At the conceptual level it identifies the basic elements that make up the static game configuration; it also describes the game dynamics, i.e. the state changes of the various game components in the course of time. At the technical level it presents a basic system architecture, which comprises various building tools. Various building tools will be explained and illustrated with technical implementations that are part of the Emergo toolkit for scenario-based game development. At the practical level, a set of design principles are presented for controlling and reducing game design complexity. The principles cover the topics of game structure, feedback and game representation, respectively. Practical application of the framework and the associated toolkit is briefly reported and evaluated.

The expansion of new technologies (e.g., tools and programs) will inevitably change future jobs in the area of, for example, engineering, healthcare, and science. People working in these areas need digital human capital, which is often acquired through education prior to starting a job. As a result, higher education systems around the globe face increasing demands to prepare their students for the changing labor market. To meet these demands, it is essential to focus on both lecturers’ and students’ digital competencies. Teaching professionals will have to learn to do new things using new resources. This goes beyond merely replacing work forms and resources; it is a complex process that demands a deeper way of learning in which routines and underlying knowledge and beliefs are explicitly reconsidered. Attention needs to be paid to how lecturers can gradually and continuously develop their professional competencies i...
