Every coffee lover knows how important it is for your morning cup to be hot, fresh, and flavorful.

The best way to enjoy the perfect cup of joe every morning is to invest in a reliable coffee maker. An automatic coffee machine is a durable, hands-off option that’s straightforward to use. Plus, they’re often programmable so you can drink before you think in the morning.

In search of the best automatic coffee machines, we put 21 leading models to the test. We assessed performance, ease of use, design, durability, and ease of cleaning. If you’re searching for a reliable, straightforward automatic coffee machine that consistently brews high-quality java and isn’t challenging to clean, read on for the top-performing models we tried.

Star Qualities
  • Delivers complex, flavorful, barista-quality brews

  • Simple and intuitive control panel

  • Comes in 12 sleek colors

Red Flags
  • Carafe’s snap-on lid can make cleaning difficult

This fully outfitted automatic coffee maker performed well across our tests. We especially loved how easy this model was to operate and program. Our pre-programmed brews started on time, and the coffee came out clear and hot with minimal grind residue. The brew tasted complex and flavorful using every setting.

It’s worth noting that the glass carafe can get hot to the touch when it’s full. We also found that the snap-on lid made things more difficult to clean. Overall, though, this machine offers incredible value and consistently great-tasting coffee.

Capacity: 14 cups | Carafe Type: Glass | Features: 24-hour programming, strength control, adjustable carafe temperature, automatic shut-off, clean function

Star Qualities
  • Comes in 8 different colors

  • Most affordable on our list

  • Automatic pause feature works perfectly

  • Coffee holds its heat while sitting on the pot

Red Flags
  • No outside measurement on water reservoir

  • Control panel can be a little confusing

This lightweight, stylish coffee maker comes in eight colors to match a variety of kitchen aesthetics. It delivers high-quality coffee that stays hot in the carafe. Plus, the glass carafe is easy to clean and won’t stain or retain odor.

While it’s sleek and yields great coffee, this machine has a less intuitive control panel than others we tested. The touchscreen buttons aren’t clearly labeled, and there was a learning curve to operate the machine. Once we figured it out, though, this high-capacity brewer delivered great-tasting coffee, and the programming feature worked well every time.

Capacity: 14 cups | Carafe Type: Glass | Features: 24-hour programming, strength control, 1-4-cup setting, replaceable charcoal water filter, clean function, automatic shut-off, keep warm mode, pause and serve option

Star Qualities
  • Slim design ideal for small spaces

  • Super easy to program

  • Produces excellent-tasting coffee that stays hot in carafe

Red Flags
  • Water reservoir not removable

This barista-quality coffee maker is easy to use and program and delivers exceptional coffee. This machine blooms the beans with each brew, producing fully-flavored, complex coffee. The insulated stainless steel carafe stayed cool to the touch, even when full of hot coffee. The carafe also kept the coffee hot for an hour (with zero impact on taste). There was no coffee residue at the bottom of our cup, and the machine was easy to clean by hand.

This is a fantastic option for anyone looking to invest in coffee shop-quality coffee at home. The machine is reliable and well-made, and its compact footprint is great for smaller kitchens.

Capacity: 7.5 cups | Carafe Type: Stainless steel | Features: Adjustable bloom time, customizable brew temperature and flow rate, 6 presets, iced coffee function, pour-over adaptor compatible, small cup detection

Star Qualities
  • Consistently yields excellent coffee

  • Minimalist control panel is easy to operate

  • Feature for brewing iced coffee

  • Carafe has thumb-activated pouring for smooth serving

Red Flags
  • Conical carafe is hard to clean

  • Instruction manual can be confusing

This well-designed machine consistently produced great-tasting coffee. We love the simple, pared-down design. The control panel consists of a few clearly labeled, buttons that take no time to learn. The programming function works perfectly, so you can set your coffee the night before and sleep soundly knowing it will be hot and ready when you wake up.

This model also has an iced coffee setting that brews up to five cups of highly concentrated java to pour over ice. This is a great machine for anyone who loves cold coffee and has counter space to spare.

Capacity: 10 cups | Carafe Type: Stainless steel | Features: 24-hour programming, time-saver mode, removable water reservoir, iced coffee option, clean function, adjustable sound signal, thumb-activated pouring on carafe

Star Qualities
  • Tall, slender design great for small spaces

  • Carafe stays cool to the touch

  • Quick brew time

Red Flags
  • Difficult to drain excess water from reservoir

This automatic maker consistently delivered delicious, full-bodied coffee. It took less than eight minutes to brew a full pot, and the coffee also retained its complex fruity flavor after sitting in the carafe for an hour and didn’t turn bitter or “cooked.”

Though a few drops were spilled when we tested the “auto-pause” feature by pulling out the carafe mid-brew, the machine quickly and cleanly returned to regular brewing when the carafe was back in place. This machine is easy to operate, and the sleek, minimalist design looks great on the counter. The biggest drawback was that the water reservoir was difficult to empty. If excess water is left behind, you have to turn the machine upside down to dump it, which can make a mess.

Capacity: 9 cups | Carafe Type: Stainless steel | Features: 24-hour programming, brew pause option, freshness timer, automatic wake-up timer, adjustable water temperature

Other Automatic Coffee Machines We Tried

  • Ninja 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Brewer: Though this machine worked relatively well, it emitted a ton of steam while brewing, so it’s not ideal for use under wooden cabinets. Special features (like the programming function) worked nicely, but the carafe felt clunky.
  • Black and Decker 12-Cup Thermal Coffee Maker: Though this machine was easy to use, we weren’t overly impressed by the coffee it produced. It also felt cheaply made, so it might not last as long as other models we tested.
  • Amazon Basics Programmable Coffee Maker: This is a simple, easy-to-use, and affordable machine, but it produced mediocre coffee.

What to Know About Automatic Coffee Machines

Design

Whether you're looking for a single-serve machine like a Keurig coffee maker or a brewer fit to fuel a crowd, choose a machine that’s intuitive to use and made of durable materials — especially if you’re using it every day (or multiple times a day!). Since you’re likely to keep this machine on the counter, look for one that matches your home aesthetic that you’ll be happy to see on display. Automatic coffee makers are simpler to operate than more complex, high-tech manual espresso machines. Look for a machine with a simple interface that’s clearly labeled and easy to learn.

Also, consider any extra functionality beyond simply brewing a pot of coffee. If you like to set up your coffee the night before so it’s hot and ready in the morning, choose a programmable machine. If you tend to leave coffee in the carafe to refill your cup throughout the morning, opt for a maker with a stainless steel carafe rather than a glass one.

What We Learned

After 24 hours of testing, we found that metal carafes outperform glass carafes in terms of heat retention and ease of cleaning. You may have to pay a little more for a machine with a stainless steel carafe, but it’s worth it if you like to sip hot coffee throughout the day.

Extra Features

Many of the products we tested come with additional features in addition to 24-hour programming and automatic shut-off. Several of our top picks include temperature and brew strength controls and “pause brew” functionality. The Breville model even has an iced coffee option.

Price Range

Many automatic coffee machines we tested performed well in multiple assessments, so price became an important factor in choosing the winners. The priciest model, which received a perfect score across the board, was the Breville model at $330. The least expensive, the $59 Beautiful by Drew Barrymore machine, still scored well in all our tests. If you’re looking for something in the middle, our overall favorite from Cuisinart costs a reasonable $100.

Behind the Scenes

The PEOPLE Tested team spent 24 hours trying out 21 best-selling automatic coffee makers, scoring each machine on five attributes: performance, ease of use, design, durability, and ease of cleaning.

  • Design: We first set up each model by adding water to the reservoir using the included carafe. We considered the reservoir capacity, how easy the machine is to fill without spilling, and whether you can see the amount of water added.
  • Ease of Use: We then tested the functionality of the control panels. We measured how intuitive the controls are to use and how easy it is to use special features like programming a brew. We noted any handy features like alarms or lights that indicated a completed brewing cycle.
  • Performance: We brewed coffee at every strength offered by the machine and tasted each batch to assess strength and flavor. We scored the coffee on taste, noting any bitterness or sweetness, and considered body and mouthfeel. We also noted if any grounds leaked into the brew. We then left a pot of brewed coffee for an hour and checked if it stayed hot in the carafe, and whether the flavor or quality was affected by sitting around.
  • Ease of Cleaning: Most coffee drinkers use their coffee machine at least once a day, so ease of cleaning is essential. We cleaned each carafe and brew basket according to the manufacturer’s instructions and brew basket and graded how easy the process was.
  • Durability: We assessed any damage during testing and considered the quality of the materials and general construction.
