I saw a reel about it last week and we decided last minute to do it tonight for Christmas Eve. Kyle looked over at me and said “This is my new favorite tradition. I want to do this every year…even when our boys have their own families. We can just have a giant Shepherd’s dinner on the living room floor.” 🥹 It’s so simple and it symbolizes the shepherds who first heard the news of Jesus’ birth. You eat foods that the shepherds might have eaten years and years ago—cheese, crackers, nuts, fruits, etc. and you eat by candlelight. We also read the Christmas story as a family while eating. We love this tradition either at the start of the Christmas season or on Christmas Eve. It’s really special to imagine what life may have been like for Mary and Joseph through our sense of taste. I love having the lights off with just a few candles or a lamp so we can really imagine what life was like in Bethlehem. It creates a hush and reverence in our meal and has become such a special tradition. Afterward we like to watch The Christ Child, a beautiful 17-minute nativity story on YouTube, or the First Presidency Christmas devotional.
