14K views · 684 reactions | Back Row Hitting Drill 🔥 Here are a few variations that we like to start our athletes with to get more comfortable hitting back row balls. When thinking about a back row compared to the front row, the first thing we want to consider is the distance between our body and the net. When we are taking a back row swing, we have to consider that we are slightly farther from the net compared to a front row, meaning we need to aim high and make up for the difference. Here are a few tips to help you get started: ✅ As per usual, getting our feet to the ball is the most important place to start to ensure we aren’t hitting the ball in a position that is behind us or too far in front of us, as well as getting it in front of our hitting shoulder. However, we do want to lead ourself so that we are transferring our weight into the ball. Starting with standing downballs can help with ensuring you are beating the ball to where it is and getting in the best position to optimize your arm swing. We like to start with this as it allows the athlete to focus on one aspect (arm swing, getting to the ball) rather than complicating it with timing of approach all at once. ✅ Arm swing should be the same as any other attack you would do, however we want to really think of aiming high deep corners. We need to consider the distance between the net and you, so hitting straight down as though you are front row won’t for the most part work in your favour. Reach high (should feel a stretch in the armpit) to get the highest point of contact and get that angle for deep corners. ✅ Our approach should be fast & to the ball. Making sure you are staying patient, then explode to the ball, ensuring you are building momentum and speed. Last two steps should be fast and hoppy. ✅ Use each drill to play around with angles. Acting as though you have 1-2 big blockers in the middle & work around them. Set up some pool noodles to help you mimic blockers hands. ⬇️ Let us know if you found this helpful & what other skills you would like us to cover in our next post ⬇️ #yyc #volleyball #volleyballdrills #volleyballalberta #yycvolleyball #volleyballplayer # | YF Volleyball Performance
