"Liberty Or Death" Confederate Flag captured by Pvt. William Pvt. William Goodman, Co. I, Fifth Michigan Cavalry when his Custer Cavalry Brigade unit overran a Confederate baggage train at Jack's Shop, Virginia at the time Confederate General J. E. B. Stuart was there protecting Lee's retreat from Gettysburg. Goodman was captured at James City, Virginia on October 11, 1863, and died a prisoner of war at Andersonville, Georgia on July 24, 1864.
Civil War Confederate Swallow Tail Flag
Confederate Swallow Tail Flag. Also known as a lance pennon, fork-tailed flag, and guidon, swallow tail flags were carried by smaller company sized units, usually cavalry or artillery. This flag features a blue letter "L" inside a white diamond. Although this flag remains unidentified, a nearly identical flag was used by the 5th Virginia Cavalry. The flag was brought home by a New Hampshire soldier and later found in an attic in 1987.
