There are about 10 species of small flowering plants called Lady Palms in the Rhapis genus. These dainty-looking fan palms are native to Southeast Asia, southern Japan, southern China and south to Sumatra (a large island in west Indonesia). All Raphis palms have thin unbranched stems growing up to 7 to 23 feet tall.
The Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) is a small species of palm that grows in dense clusters of slender green stems. On the stems are light green fan-shaped leaves, each with 5-8 narrow lance-shaped segments. Because this palm is extremely tolerant of low light conditions, it often grows as a houseplant indoors.
