WikimediaSpace blocking editors without confirmed email address
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

I am an established editor with somewhere upwards of ten years and somewhere upwards of ten thousand edits. I was reading on-wiki about the Rebranding proposal, and the the on-wiki link said I had to go to Space if I wanted to view important information or participate. The link brought me to a Space page saying something to the effect that I could not view this group or proceed without logging in. Clicking the login link brought up OAuth and the following message:

Your Wikimedia email is not verified. Please verify it at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ConfirmEmail.

I of course understand and expect any email-notification or similar features will not work without an email. However I consider it a seriously inappropriate for the Foundation to start blocking important information and invitations-to-participate behind this wall.

Wikimedia Space (or more precisely OAuth) does not know about any established editors. It's simply doing what it's configured to do for users without confirmed email address.

... and Discourse requires email address for user creation.

I'm declining this task. Currently there are no plans to use Wikimedia Space (Discourse) for Foundation activities. In any case, make Wikimedia Login work in Discourse for users without an email address is probably a big technical challenge.
