70s peasant dress

We adore feminine and romantic clothing and while there are several time periods in history that play up these looks really well, we have a soft spot for the folky peasant inspired fashions of the 1970s. The image above was originally from a January 1973 issue of Seventeen magazine and included the caption:

1972 -- peasant dresses. I wore one to my wedding reception!

Peasant dress was a mix of hippie meets Edwardian (post-Victorian era) modesty with a touch of folk art. They were tea or ankle length maxi dresses (or skirts) in homey prints. They were trimmed in ruffles, lace, and embroidery. American companies Gunne Sax and Arpeja who sold millions of these Edwardian dresses.
