This is an amazing core exercise - when done correctly! 

The biggest mistake I often see clients do when they perform this exercise is to flare their ribs. What this does is cause the abdominals to be in a lengthened position making it harder to activate! Keeping ribs down towards the mat (without holding your breath) is going to give you the most bang for your buck

Core activation is extremely important when addressing back pain, hip pain, groin pain, and abdominal pain/strains.
