I'm actually pretty mad. This isn't as simple as budgets. Removing Kamala's polymorphing is a huge crime against her character tbh.
In the comics, when she gets her powers, the first thing she ends up doing is shapeshift into Carol Danvers. Because she feels safer that way. It's all about her bad self image. She feels out of place everywhere. She wants to be someone else. Ms Marvel is everything she isn't: classically beautiful, strong, not to mention white. It's a commentary on beauty standards, on hero worship, and on insecurity.
Her initial arc is about embracing who she is. She has to stop chasing after the example of Carol Danvers. She has to make Ms Marvel her own. She rarely if ever changes her appearance later on. It's still something she *can* do, but the point is that she doesn't need to; she doesn't need to be the picture of western beauty to be a superhero. Her powers are weird and gross because that's part of what the story is trying to say.
Removing all that and replacing it with... glowy hard light powers is just.... Cheap. It cheapens the story. It cheapens why I like the character. I don't like it. Boo.
