Marie is attracted by his he-manliness but repulsed by his crude advances and retreats to the suave approach of Théophile. When the apache visits her with the intention of carrying her away, she shoots him. Then, driven by remorse to his bedside, she learns that he is a nobleman who turned to the underworld as a result of shell shock, and she comes to love him for his expression of manly courage.
