The chief clerk in this office, Mark Loring, is attracted by the girl's beauty and becomes a persistent suitor. Mr. Steele himself falls in love with his attractive employee and is surprised one day to find Loring and Margaret very much wrapped up in each other. Loring gives Margaret flowers and boxes of candy, but she has grown to care for her employer. Financial difficulties arise at home and Margaret's mother writes her for assistance, explaining that unless $1000 is raised within a limited period, their house will be taken from them. Margaret is distracted, but while reading the letter she is surprised by Loring, who hands her a check for the amount. She accepts, but in doing so, gives Loring the opportunity he desires, and at a little dinner party that evening he takes advantage of the obligation and grossly insults her. Later he continues his advances and Margaret sees that the only way she can free herself is to repay him the $1000. The chance comes when Mr. Steele hands her a checkbook with several checks signed by him. He orders her to fill out the amounts, and in a weak moment she makes one out payable to herself for $1000 and hands it to her persecutor. He denounces her as a forger and at that moment Steele enters the room. He learns of the girl's error, dismisses the chief clerk, and, not knowing the suffering she has endured, also discharges her. She returns to her parents and tells of her mistake. One day Steele, in looking over her papers, finds the letter from her mother that tells of the mortgage. He then realizes the great sacrifice the girl has made, rushes out of his office and goes to Margaret's home. He finds her in her little gingham gown with a towel tied around her head and a broom in her hand, working industriously. Upon seeing him she tries to make herself more presentable, but he insists upon taking her to his arms just as she is. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
