Broken-hearted, she lavishes all her love and grief on the engagement ring that was previously given her. Later, misfortune falls on the family. Her mother, suspecting that the dead man's ring is the cause of it, steals the ring from the girl's finger while she sleeps and casts it out in the street. Next morning the ring is found and taken to the home of a rag-picker. For a while fortune seems to smile upon Francesca's family. In the meanwhile Mario, a young Italian, discovers the ring in the old man's possession and suspecting him forces a confession. The girl is identified by the old man, who has seen her searching the streets for her ring. Mario is struck by the girl's beauty and decides to win her love. He intends giving the ring to her as an engagement present. When the ring is offered her, after she has given her love, all the past tragic history connected with it springs before her mind and she rejects the present. The old rag-picker, half drunk, goes in the night to regain the ring from Mario. He falls downstairs and is killed. The boy is held as a suspect. Next morning Francesca tells her story to the district attorney and the prisoner is released. Together, Francesca and Mario go down to the river, where they ceremoniously consign the fatal ring to its depths and face a happy life together. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
