She has shown her preference for Arthur, who has threatened to whip Willis. Willis, the paymaster at the mill, is found in the morning in his office badly beaten up, with the payroll missing. Suspicion leads to Arthur. He is arrested and held for trial. In the paymaster's office Edythe finds a heel. Later, when she sees a tramp with the heel gone from one of his shoes she surmises that he is the guilty party.
