Grayson arrives and is attracted to Jean through sympathy. He notices she is snubbed by her companions. It being impossible for her to attend some of the classes, she gets behind in her studies. He offers to help her after hours, and the two meet surreptitiously at night in the library to study together. Grayson considers Jean in the light of a child whom he wishes to help, not realizing that his attentions may compromise her. Betty Marshall, a wealthy girl and belle of the school, falls in love with Grayson, and upon his gently but firmly repulsing her advances, and having seen Jean and Grayson together, she determines to eliminate Jean as a rival, causing her disgrace in the school. She accuses Jean of having stolen several articles of jewelry, having as a foundation the fact that Jean has access to her room in her capacity of hairdresser. Jean is unable to defend herself, but begs that she may remain at the school until the final mid-winter examinations are passed. Betty plans to still further ruin Jean. One night she enters the laboratory, changes the chemicals at Jean's test table, knowing that if Jean uses a certain chemical it will cause an explosion. Jean has promised to meet Grayson in the laboratory for the last time. As she nears the laboratory she is amazed to hear a terrific explosion, and sees Betty sink to the ground. She rushes in and at the risk of her own life, rescues Betty, whose careless use of chemicals has caused the explosion. Betty is badly burned, but when convalescent, she sends for Jean, and confesses that in her jealousy she, herself, was responsible for the disappearance of the jewels. In asking Jean to forgive her, Betty tells her that she had acted on the principle that "all is fair in love and war," but had not counted on the intervention of fate to cure her of her folly. Thus Jean is completely exonerated, and her face is radiant with happiness as the Professor draws her to him and makes the announcement that she is soon to become his wife.
