He lowers his head for a moment to light a cigarette and then looks up. Ahead of him looms a newsboy on a bicycle. He desperately swings the wheel in a vain attempt to avoid crashing into him. After a brief agonizing moment of indecision, Harry stops his car to look at the prostrate boy with the crumpled bike and the newspapers scattered all over the street. Panic stricken, Harry jumps back into his car and drives off. He does not tell his wife (Betty Field) or anyone else about the accident. From this point on Harry feels mounting tension as he tries in vain to run from his hit-and-run crime, only to find it waiting for him at each turn.
