One of them, Bob Livingstone, in a spirit of bravado, declared that unless he was a millionaire by that time he would shoot himself. Fate seemed to take his jest in earnest, for within a few years Bob's brokerage firm had failed and he was penniless. Before this occurred Bob had fallen in love with Mae, his pretty stenographer. She clung to him in his adversity and later they were married, Bob having secured a position as bookkeeper. Life went rather hard for the ambitious young man and his lot seemed even more bitter when he read of the big financial coup made by Jack Norton, one of his classmates. He had become a millionaire. His wife was his one comfort. The ten years passed and Bob received an invitation to the anniversary banquet. Ashamed of his failure, he was unwilling to attend until Mae persuaded him to do so. After dressing he placed a loaded revolver in his pocket. At the banquet Jack Norton told with great gusto the story of his success in amassing a great fortune. Bob's thoughts were very bitter. Just as the successful Norton was finishing his speech there was a knock on the door. A detective entered and ordered Norton and his partner to follow him. The two millionaires had gained money, but not within the law. Soon after the officer had taken them out two shots were heard; they had killed themselves. Bob awakened to the fact that money is by no means everything in the world. He went home completely changed, realizing his own great wealth in the possession of a good home, a loving wife and a beautiful child. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
