I state for the historical record my personal testimony related to the Hopi prophecy. In the late 1960s, my wife and I joined the Committee for Traditional Indian Land and Life (T.I.L.L.) to provide legal assistance for the Nisqually Indians seeking to protect their fishing rights in Washington state and the Hopi resistance against drilling for oil and mining for coal and uranium by the Peabody Coal Company. Hopi elders sought publicity for their ancient prophecy that the divine plan is for the simple life in harmony with the land. Dan Katchongva and James Kots walked me to Prophecy Rock and told me that in the past many of their ancestors had gone off to create societies of material wealth, calling to mind the fates of the Aztecs, the Mayans, the Incas. The mining and adoration of gold expedited their doom. Forty years ago, nobody thought about carbon. The Hopi prediction that drilling and mining would lead to disaster seemed only metaphorical and self-serving. Today it is exactly the accepted scientific assessment. The geographical and philosophical distance of the Hopi in their desert isolation no doubt gave them perspective on the relatively sudden mass invasion of the West during the late 19th century. Like scientists today, perhaps they saw capitalism very clearly going out of control.
