Lev Grigoryevich Preobrazhensky, a talented maxillofacial surgeon, dreams of creating an Institute of Beauty - the first Soviet institution that will deal with plastic surgery and reduce the gap from the West in this advanced branch of medicine. His young colleague, Igor Zorin, dreams of escaping from the USSR abroad: to a place where talented plastic surgeons can find a worthy use for no less worthy remuneration. For the sake of his dream, Preobrazhensky makes a deal with the KGB: he is allowed to open an experimental department if operations are carried out in it, which no one except the Committee will know about. For the sake of his dream, Zorin makes a deal with Preobrazhensky: he agrees to work with him, despite all differences - if it helps him escape.
