They do not know each other, but survival has led them to help each other find shelter in a bombed-out church. Hidden behind the altar, with a broken crucifix on the verge of collapsing above them, they start getting to know each other during the night and begin to develop feelings that go against the societal norm for their day and age. Fred tells John about a story he had once heard, of a domesticated pig going back into the wild and turning into a "monster." Something that perhaps happens to any tame animal when they find freedom again, much like humans. During the night, John is woken up to the sound of a bomb; Fred is nowhere to be found. John looks for him following the pained cries of a wounded pig, not knowing that a trap is set and waiting for him.
