Private Ito is happy at the news, but his commanding officer, Lt. Takeda, believes the news to be an American trick, attempting to lure them out from hiding, and demands that they continue living on the island. Caught in the middle of their feud, Shima must chose between obeying his commander or believing in the possibility that the war might truly be over.
