When you’re out there, and everybody’s watching, that 90 seconds is going to feel like an ETERNITY for EVERYONE. If you want to stretch this out, pick a song that is a little more upbeat (like Forever Young) and invite the guests to join you on the dance floor about 1/2 way through. 2. NO CHOREOGRAPHY: This never, EVER goes well. I lied, one time it went well because the bride was a literal backup dancer for Lady Gaga. If that’s you, touché. Everyone else, DON’T DO IT. First dance should be 2 minutes max, for the same reasons as above. 3. RECESSIONAL SONG: Queue this song as SOON as the officiant says “by the power vested in me” or it will be AWKWARD AS HELL when yall do your 1st kiss. 4. LAST SONG OF THE NIGHT: This song is just as if not MORE important than the first dance because when done right, everyone will make a circle around you 2 on the dance floor, in one huge kumbaya embrace, singing along and creating the most ICONIC lasting memory of your wedding. CHOOSE THIS SONG WISELY (comment LAST DANCE for my list of favs) 5. NO SLOW SONGS: They clear the dance floor and then you’ve got a TALL ORDER in asking everyone to come back. Just don’t do it. There’s no need. 6. NO BREAKS: YOU HEARD ME. Work with your entertainment to rotate musicians or queue a playlist if they need to, but a BREAK IN MUSIC is an absolute dance floor d*@th sentence. RULE OF 3rds: First 3rd should include motown and pop songs EVERYONE knows (think Ain’t no Mountain High Enough and Uptown Funk). Second 3rd should venture into pop and pop-hip-hop (think Party in the USA and Crazy in Love), and the last 3rd is packed with nostalgic singalongs and raunchy rap (think Don’t Stop Believin and Get Low).
