Minimalist
The minimalist concept is one that’s popular here in Australia. It takes notions of modern design and simplifies them further.
Colour palettes are neutral and airy; furnishings are simple and streamlined, and nothing is excessive or flamboyant in accessories or décor.
Minimalism is ultimately defined by a sense of functionality and ultra-clean lines.
Key Features
The minimalist trend started in the early twentieth century and continues to pervade many aspects of modern life, interior design included. Initially influenced by the simplicity of Japanese design, minimalism works on the principle that less is more. Minimalist interiors are stripped down to their essential elements and empty space is left to make the design statement. Use color sparingly in minimalist rooms, the idea is not to distract or detract from its simplicity. Black, white and primary colors are often regarded as best for a minimalist space.
Expert Advice
“MINIMALIST STYLING IS NOT ABOUT CREATING A COLD, HARD, EMPTY WHITE BOX OF A HOME. IT IS ABOUT USING SIMPLE AND NATURAL FORMS, AND TAKING AWAY LAYERS WITHOUT LOSING THE AESTHETIC APPEAL OF THE SPACE. THE FOCUS IS ON SHAPE, COLOR AND TEXTURE, WITH A MINIMUM OF FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES.” NICOLA HOLDEN, INTERIOR DESIGNER
The minimalist movement is far more than a decorating theme – it’s a way of life best summed up by the motto, “Less is more.” Living simply, owning just what you need, generating as little waste as possible, and keeping life uncluttered are hallmarks of minimalism.
The key is to keep the palette limited to just one or two soft colors – white, black, and gray are common – leave as much open space in the room as possible, and keep the surfaces of furniture mostly bare. Add character with touches of subdued color, a few well-chosen accessories, and a bit of contrasting texture throughout the room.
