Batman Daruma-san
Every time I travel to Japan, I bring back a very specific souvenir. I love daruma. Usually, they don't have any pupils. You give it one when you set your intention. You give it a second one when you complete your goal. This one came with its eyes filled. I call him Batman. He looks a little grumpy, but I love him anyway. You can find a different Daruma-san in TANABATA WISH.
Squat Toilet, Japan
Japan is simultaneously old-school and in the 23rd Century. Case in point: Toilets. Either you will be overwhelmed by all the buttons on the state-of-the-art toilet or you will be popping a squat the old-fashioned way to do your business. This is also a BYOTP kind of toilet.
Making Tanabata Wishes in Japan
If you are in Japan this summer around July 7th, look for Tanabata (The Star-Crossed Lovers) decorations. If you see pieces of bamboo with little bookmark-like papers on it, those are tanzaku--wish papers. Write your wish! Just sayin' that all of my tanzaku wishes have come true. Sometimes they take more than a year to manifest, but they always do. Go for it! Of course, I had to have Skyler and Ryouhei make one in TANABATA WISH. It's in Chapter 23 when they go to the Ichinomiya Tanabata Matsuri (the Star Festival)/
Behind the Scenes of TANABATA WISH: Konbini food
Is it the most nutritious dinner? No. Is it delicious? Oh, yes! During the taifu (hurricane) in Chapter 13, Ryouhei brings Skyler some of his favorite foods from Lawson's (a famous konbini chain in Japan) and a flashlight. The power might be out, and the roof leaking water, but Skyler finds a silver lining to her predicament with Ryouhei. There also might be some kissing...but I won't confirm or deny that.

Sriracha Vending Machine in Osu, Japan
Japan has no shortage of unusual vending machines, but this one surprised me. I found this Sriracha vending machine in Osu, Japan. Japanese food generally isn't spicy, but I guess Japanese foodies have adopted this worldly food.
Train Station Lockers, Nagoya, Japan
Day-tripping and backpacking in Japan is easy when you can leave your suitcase or backpack in a train station locker to pick up later. The hardest part is remembering where!
Behind the Book: Chunichi Dragons Baseball Game, Nagoya, Japan
Chapter 19 of TANABATA WISH takes place at a Chunichi Dragons professional baseball game in Nagoya, Japan. Have you ever been to a Japanese baseball game? Though it is America's pastime, Japan has put some interesting twists on it. All of which Skyler will tell you about in TANABATA WISH.
Tanabata Matsuri, Japan
I was a journalist first, so you know I had to take reference pictures for my Tanabata scene in TANABATA WISH. See the brown rabbit sitting on the man's shoulder. Totally put that in my book! Have you ever been to a Star Festival?
Jirachi (tanabata style)
I am very happy today to show your my new art with Jirachi, on the theme of Tanabata. Tanabata (七夕節 lit. July 7) is a festival that, as its Japanese literary name suggests, takes place every July 7. This festival, also called the Star Festival (Hoshi Matsuri 星祭り), celebrates the meeting between two stars, two lovers who can only meet once a year during the Tanabata, according to japanese folklore. During this festival, Japanese people write their wishes on small pieces of paper called tanzaku an
