This is a Japanese sword, or katana, from the Edo Period (1600-1803). The sword was curved, so the wielder can draw and attack in one motion. Only the samurai were allowed to carry them. I really like katanas, because of their design aesthetically and their purpose in battle. Making these swords would take a lot of time and effort, and a lot of care was put into making them. The edge was designed to be as thin and sharp as possible.
