Conventional Clamping with the AMFLEX

Clamping Workholding System
S.A.F.E. elements use ball pads to support the workpiece. These ball pads are flexible and align
themselves to the contour of the workpiece. The clamping bars also have ball pads, therefore
distortion of the part is practically eliminated. When properly applied, the AMFLEX system
guarantees flexible positioning and stress-free clamping.

The AMFLEX Modular Workholding System has four standard sizes S.A.F.E.
self-aligning fixture elements. The four sizes differ by the diameter of the ball
and the overall size of the units. Ball elements are available with either a smooth
or serrated surface. Ball elements used as supporting units hold precision heights
of + .0005 on smooth balls and semi-precision heights of + .005 for serrated balls.

Fixture System - Vertical
Function: Positioning of the workpiece
1st plane: Place workpiece on three supporting

units (A).
2nd plane: Butt workpiece against two locating
points (B).
3rd plane: Butt workpiece flush against third
locating point (C).
Function: Clamping of the workpiece with

hold down effect
The unique construction of the AMFLEX
Horizontal Clamp produces a downward as
well as horizontal clamping force to insure
that the workpiece will be held securely. The
Horizontal Locators and Clamps have corre-
sponding dual mounting positions located in
their faces to allow clamping of thin as well
as thick parts. For added holding power, ser-
rated Ball Elements can be used in place of
smooth units.
CAUTION: Serrated Ball Elements will pro-
duce depressions where the Carbide grips
contact the workpiece.

This is a list of some commonly requested

grid base sizes. They are only a small sam-
ple of the sizes and shapes of grid plates
and uprights that can be made. Sizes and
shapes not listed can be readily made to
your exact specifications. See our AMROK
Cubes
Tombstone Catalog for other shapes and
sizes.
All grid bases are available in four styles:
Type NH with no holes. Double Angles

Type TH with tapped holes.
Type BT with bored and tapped holes.
Type S.A.F.E. with precision hardened
bushings and hardened-steel threaded
inserts.
Window Frames
Type NH, TH, and BT grid bases are
described on the next page.
Type S.A.F.E. Grid Bases are described on

all subsequent pages of this section.

We also offer design and build services to

assist you in meeting your requirements.
Whether it is producing a 4 x 6 x 8 Single Angles
console, an 84 x 144 machine tool plate,
or a hydraulic or manual dedicated fixture,
we have your solution.
Pallet riser blocks in excess of 12 high can

also be furnished.
Grid Plates
All grid bases are inspected on one of our
two DEA Coordinate Measuring Machines:
200 x 80 x 54, and 72 x 38 x 24.
Any hardened precision bushing, hardened

threaded insert, and any of our four styles Risers
available upon request.
Consoles

Type NH - No Holes
This style is commonly used for dedicated fixturing. The holes are machined by the end
user. Advanced Machine will machine the holes per specification. If desired, our S.A.F.E.
Lock system or Jergens Ball Lock alignment system are options for mounting dedicated
plates on tombstones.
Type TH - Tapped Holes

Inch and metric threads are offered. Any size and configuration in addition to grid Type NH
patterns are available. 1 and 2 grid patterns are offered as well as 3/4,
1 1/2 and offset grids.
Tolerances: Hole to hole non-accumulative = + .005 (for Precision)

and +/- .008 (for Standard).
Type BT - Bored and Tapped Holes

An economical alternative to the S.A.F.E. bases. For those applications that do not
require the ultimate in precision and wear resistance. Available in either shoulder bolt
or threaded dowel pin configurations. Shoulder bolt holes are available in all common
Type TH
sizes:
1/4 bore x #10 thread, 5/16 bore x 1/4 thread, 3/8 bore x 5/16 thread
1/2 bore x 3/8 thread, 5/8 bore x 1/2 thread, 3/4 bore x 5/8 thread
1 bore x 3/4 thread, course or fine threads to be specified. Metric sizes also available.
Precision threaded dowel pin holes are available in the following sizes:
5/16 x 5/16, 1/2 x 1/2, 5/8 x 5/8, 3/4 x 3/4, and 1 x 1 (metric sizes also available).
Due to the close size relationship of the precision threaded dowel pin diameter to the
major diameter of the tap, slight spiraling on the bore of the hole may be noticeable.
This will not affect the accuracy or precision fit of the bore.

Co-axial positioned bushings and inserts allow both positioning and clamping
in every hole. The use of hardened precision bushings assures high wear
resistance and replaceability. Glued-in bushings allow replacement without
damage to the grid base or hole. If the insert is damaged, it too can usually
be replaced without redrilling and tapping. Replacement bushings and insert
16 kits with extraction tool are offered if needed.

etc.). Mounting horizontally or vertically
for quick-change dedicated machining,
they locate accurately by using any two
of the four precision hardened bushing
holes with our precision dowel screws
(AMF-87544). Please specify material
when ordering (steel, aluminum, or
cast iron).

APPLICATION EXAMPLE OF EDGE TOWERS AND SPACERS
The height, diameter, and counter bore of all AMFLEX

Edge Towers are made to precise tolerances and held
concentric to within .0005. This attention to detail
allows them to be used as locators in all three axis
(X,Y, & Z) for both 1st and 2nd operation of fixtures.
1.000, 1.500 and 2.000 edge towers may also
be combined to accurately locate pre-machined edges
without stacking the error. When used in dedicated
fixtures they make excellent precision rest pads and
locators.
AMFLEX Precision Block Spacers have the same height tolerance as Precision Edge Towers with the
added benefit of being able to set them at any given angle. Care should be taken when using these units in
an offset position to ensure that lateral machining forces are compensated by side locators and stops.

400 SERIES BALL ELEMENT SUPPORT CLAMPING UNIT

The height of this unit, size 400 series, can be

adjusted continuously between 1.77 and 2.16.
Clamping is achieved by using a clamping
screw. The maximum loading force is 1,124 lbs.
A torque range moment of 7.4 ft. lbs. results in
a clamping force of F=900lbs. Weight of this
unit is approximately 1.2 lbs.
Extension Kit Part # AMF-54462
An extension kit is also available consisting

of a lengthened jack screw, jam nut, clamping
screw and spring. The clamping range can
be extended to 1.38 as opposed to the basic
unit which extends to .51.

By using one of our two sets of mounting

holes, this support clamping unit may be used
either horizontally or vertically. The height
of this unit, size 500 series, can be adjusted
continuously between 2.95 and 3.54.
Clamping is achieved by using clamping
wedges. The top part may be rotated 360.
This clamping unit can also be laid down hori-

zontally on a 2.00 grid for side clamping. This
configuration can be used to prevent possible
vibrations on thin webs and ribs.
For mounting this unit on the 2.00 grid plate,

screws with 1/2-13 threads are used. The
maximum loading force is 2,248 lbs. A torque
range moment of 18.5 ft. lbs. results in a
clamping for of F = 1,800 lbs. Weight of
this unit is approximately 4.7 lbs.

CLAMPING COMPONENTS
By adding a mounting plate (AMF-88505) in the horizontal position, the support clamping unit
(AMF-87505) can be used as a sliding clamping unit (AMF-54414). This configuration is
used to prevent possible vibrations on thin webs and ribs.
For secure positioning of this unit on the grid bases, mounting screws with washers are used.
Approximate weight of this unit is 6.3 lbs.

For compact clamping units series 400 and 500 spherical screws are used. The spherical surfaces of
these assemblies allow for slight adjustments (up to 3) between faces of bolts and mating faces of
clamps. This in turn, corrects misaligned parts and eliminates any undue stress on clamping bolts.
