Farrah Gafford Cambrice, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU). Dr. Cambrice’s research and teaching interests include race, disaster recovery, community building, and qualitative methods. Her peer-reviewed research appears in Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archive Professionals, Journal of Black Studies, Journal of Global Policy and Resilience and Journal of Urban History. Dr. Cambrice’s latest publication, Contemporary Debates in Social Justice :An Interdisciplinary Approach to Examining Black and Brown Lives, is an edited book featuring essays, empirical research and interviews concerning health, political and educational inequalities The themes of community and community engagement are present in Dr. Cambrice’s teaching and research. In 2018, she served as a co-principal investigator for the Smart and Connected Rural Communities Planning grant effort. The goal of this National Science Foundation-funded planning grant was to develop a framework to enable the initiation of smart technologies in Prairie View. As a co-principal investigator, Dr. Cambrice was responsible for leading the community engagement efforts. Before joining the Smart and Connected Rural Communities Planning grant effort, Cambrice collaborated with a team of scholars from Tulane University and the University of New Orleans who were interested in the recovery of neighborhoods after Hurricane Katrina. The research group was awarded one of 18 National Science Foundation Urban Long-Term Area Exploratory (ULTRA-Ex) grants to study the impact of trauma on urban biophysical, ecological, and social diversity using the study area of post-Katrina New Orleans.

This study was designed to examine the attitudes of undergraduate students toward interracial dat... more This study was designed to examine the attitudes of undergraduate students toward interracial dating. The study examined the influence of race, gender, and previous interracial dating experience on interracial dating attitudes. The independent variable of racial identity salience was also examined. A final sample consisted of 389 students, recruited from first year political science classes at the University of North Texas. An 11-item self administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results indicated that race and previous interracial dating experience was associated with college students’ attitudes. A weak association was also found between greater racial identity salience and less positive interracial dating attitudes. Future research should further examine racial identity salience and it’s role in partner selection. ii

Much of the Katrina-related research has focused primarily on how poor Black neighborhoods were disproportionately affected by the disaster. While this body of research makes valid claims, there has been very little research that examines how Black middle-class residents in New Orleans were impacted by Hurricane Katrina. This study examines how residents in Pontchartrain Park, a Black middle-class neighborhood, are responding to the disaster.The author uses in-depth interviews, ethnographic observations, and archival data to examine the barriers that residents are facing in the recovery process. She argues that the experiences of the Black middle class also have implications for the connectedness of race and class.The challenges discussed within the article are linked to a history of racial stratification.

After World War II, members of a small black middle class in southern cities such as Dallas, Atla... more After World War II, members of a small black middle class in southern cities such as Dallas, Atlanta, and New Orleans settled in newly built suburban-style subdivisions of single-family homes. While scholars have examined the design process and political negotiations that led to the development of black middle-class planned subdivisions, very little is known about how and why residents formed communal bonds. This article seeks to understand how original residents in Pontchartrain Park, a subdivision located in New Orleans, Louisiana, created a sense of community in the early years of the neighborhood. The research specifically focuses on the process of community building among adults who spent the majority if not all of their childhood and adolescent years in Pontchartrain Park. Interview data show how residents relied on communal bonds to offset some of their early experiences with racial hostility. Oral histories and ethnographic interviews allow researchers to unearth and recover remarkable st... more Oral histories and ethnographic interviews allow researchers to unearth and recover remarkable stories from our past. Paula Hamilton and Linda Shopes assert, "Oral history is at heart a deeply social practice connecting past and present and, at times, connecting narrative to action." Likewise, the "authentic" voice of communities and individuals is best accessed through these methods. This article explores oral histories and ethnographic interviews conducted in the "forgotten" Jago community (located in northwestern Mississippi) and the Pontchartrain Park community (located in New Orleans, Louisiana). The analysis of the all-black Jago community, founded during Reconstruction and absorbed by a majority white municipality during the mid-1900s, brings light to historical recovery through utilizing oral history. Additionally, the connections between oral history and public history are explored through examining the local campaign led by historians and community groups to place historical markers in the original section of the Jago community.
