Minister’s car runs over 4 protesters in Lakhimpur Kheri, farmers blame son; 4 more die in violence

Four farmers were among eight persons killed Sunday in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri after a convoy of three SUVs, including one owned by Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, hit a group of farm protesters leading to a clash.

Following the incident, farm leaders called for the “arrest of the Minister and his son” who, they said, was driving one of the SUVs. They called for a probe by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court and said they would hold protests in all districts Monday to demand punishment for the guilty.

While UP Police remained tightlipped, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) identified the four farmers killed as Lovepreet Singh (20), Daljeet Singh (35), Nachattar Singh (60) and Gurvinder Singh (19). They said 12-15 others were injured. An official at the Lakhimpur Kheri district hospital said farm leader Tejinder Singh suffered serious injuries.

Jagtaar Singh Bajwa, an SKM spokesperson, said that the “farmers were protesting peacefully”. “The Union Minister of State for Home’s son ran his car over them. In the incident, several farmers were injured and some have died,” Bajwa said.

This brutality came literal hours after the Haryana Chief Minister Lal Khattar (of the BJP, same political party as Mishra, the minister whose SUV was driven into the protesting farmers) called for open violence against farmers, and told his own supporters they would serve minimal jail time (if at all) and be openly celebrated afterward.

“Form groups of 500, 700, 1,000 people and make them volunteers. And then at every place, ‘sathe sathyam samacharet’. What does it mean – it means tit for tat,” he said.

Do not worry… When you remain there (in jail) for a month, three months or six months, you will become big leaders. Your names will be etched in history,” Khattar added.

New Video Shows Minister’s SUV Ram Unarmed Farmers At Great Speed REFUTING Minister’s Claims that Protestors Had Been “Throwing Stones” at the SUV

The video appears to contest claims by the minister and his son that their Mahindra Thar was under attack before it ran down farmers. (Updated Oct 6 2021 11:01 IST)

New Delhi:

A cleaner, longer clip of the viral video from Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri that reveals what happened on Sunday before the violent clashes shows a black SUV - which a union minister has confirmed to be his family’s - ploughing into an unarmed group of protesters at great speed.

The video appears to contest claims by the minister and his son that the driver lost control because their Mahindra Thar was under attack - the video shows no stones or sticks being thrown at the car - resulting in the death of at least four farmers and injuries to many more.

The driver seems to be well in control and intentionally driving at great speed into a group of farmers marching in front of the SUV, with their backs to it.

Ramming a high-speed SUV into protestors would NOT have been justified even if the crowd had been agitated, but this video shows in clear detail how the protestors were calm, peaceful, and how deliberately the BJP minister’s SUV was driven into the crowd.

The video is linked in the article, and I would advise that you not watch unless you deem it absolutely necessary because it is very graphic and disturbing, and shows the car crash in full detail.

[tin hat fully secured] its interesting to me how parasite and squid game have been successful in permeating in north american culture. and because we know that media is very deliberately controlled, there has to be a reason for the US empire to allow this cultural osmosis. so the question we have to ask ourselves is what about these particular movie/show is significant in shaping our perception, how is it going to impact our views on current/future geopoltical relations with US and the korean peninsula and what about the messages in the media that may position us on the side of imperialism.

while these medias both contain anti-capitalist messaging, the analysis in both, focuses on a type of personified violence between upper and lower class. I feel like this fits with the current trend of [rightfully] hating on the likes of bezos and zukerbergs and almost blaming them for capitalism. this is one way to manipulate class consciousness - rather than correctly identifying how capitalism actually works, you give people a couple of bourgeois individuals to sacrifice. its also interesting that both parasite and squid game make references to north korea but never touch on the militant presence of America and how US imperialism continues to enforce and maintain the border. its as if the US is deliberately divorced from the overall context.

as I think about these questions, I leave this quote by Edward Bernays

Propaganda does exist on all sides of us, and it does change our mental pictures of the world. Even if this be unduly pessimistic—and that remains to be proved—the opinion reflects a tendency that is undoubtedly real. In fact, its use is growing as its efficiency in gaining public support is recognized. This then, evidently indicates the fact that any one with sufficient influence can lead sections of the public at least for a time and for a given purpose. Formerly the rulers were the leaders. They laid out the course of history, by the simple process of doing what they wanted. And if nowadays the successors of the rulers, those whose position or ability gives them power, can no longer do what they want without the approval of the masses, they find in propaganda a tool which is increasingly powerful in gaining that approval. Therefore, propaganda is here to stay.
