The specific body of the books, discussed in this article, zoomed in on the home and the mundane objects filling it. This article places these books against the background of the housing experiments of the 1920s, which aspired to create a utopian socialist home based on the principles of collective life and simplification of material culture, yet, resulted in the communal flat. These housing projects destroyed the notion of home as the site of private life. This article analyzes the double-role of books depicting socialist domestic spaces. They were both a source of practical knowledge, following the doctrine that knowledge is power, and a survival strategy to resist undesired communality and reconstruct the lost sense of domesticity.
