The imperial administration was enlarged by the installation of the dioceses, although it is not sure if it was Diocletian or his successor Constantine the Great who created them. The dioceses were in fact groups of bundled adjacent provinces, which created a larger geographical, but most of all an administrative unit. Although there are some studies concerning the reasoning behind the creation of the dioceses, there are almost none which examine dioceses in-depth. The aim of this study is to show that several factors were influential in the decision-making process and tries to answer the central research question: Why were particular factors influential in the decision-making process behind the creation of the dioceses of Asiana and Africa? By answering this question a hypothesis will be created which will at least provide a nuanced idea of the obstacles that had to be faced by the Romans in order to create the administrative layer of dioceses and will hopefully be of value for the debate concerning the dioceses.

The results and own additions to this subject tries to eliminate the less plausible explanations and which will build upon the more plausible ones. This will hopefully renew the scholarly debate around Mauretania Tingitana and hence provide more insight in the reasoning behind the choices that were made concerning the creation of the Roman dioceses.
