Ms. Janina Sajka is a founding partner of a Washington-based consultancy, Capital Accessibility, LLC, whose clients include Owasys, Spain, manufacturers of the screenless 22C cellular telephone. Her professional activities include the Free Standards Group Accessibility Workgroup, the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative, and the Special Working Group on Accessibility in the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC 1) Janina’s career focus shifted to computer technology and disability in the mid-1980s as a response to her diminishing vision and loss of access to printed information. From 1990 to 2004 Janina made major contributions to the development of accessible technology and technology policy, first at the World Institute on Disability, and then at the American Foundation for the Blind. She has directed the design and deployment of Vax, Unix, and Windows network environments, and of accessible workstations for staff use. as well as public web sites and telecommunications systems for both of these highly regarded organizations. As AFB's Director of Technology Research and Development from 1999 to 2004, Janina was active in the creation of key technology standards and processes within industry and government worldwide including the DAISY/ANSI Digital Talking Book and the U.S. Governments regulations implementing Sec. 508 through the Electronic and Information Technology Access Advisory Committee. Trained as a concert pianist and composer of electronic music, she has recorded and performed repertory ranging from classical piano literature to contemporary Gospel, and she continues to perform with the group DC-Metro today. She received her B.A. in Music from Macalester College, St. Paul, MN, 1970. She has additional training in music and computer technology from the University of Minnesota, the University of California, and San Francisco State University.
