The Rock Cycle Lab Activity (with Starbursts)
The Rock Cycle: Modeling the Rock Cycle with StarburstsThis activity is a perfect follow up for a class who has just been introduced to the rock cycle. You will need starbursts (or other fruit chews of multiple colors) and plastic sandwich bags. Students begin with 'sediments' which they turn into a sedimentary rock, apply heat and pressure to turn it into a metamorphic rock, and then you (the teacher) will need to take them home to turn them into igneous rocks. Rock Cycle Review Board Game Journey of a Rock Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic
This simple rock cycle science board game is the perfect way to review and reinforce how different types of rocks form including sedimentary (compaction and cementation), igneous (melting and cooling), and metamorphic (heat and pressure). To play "Journey of a Rock," players roll a die and move their game pieces around the board. If they land on an action space (like "melting and cooling") they move to the indicated rock (igneous). Every time a player moves to one of the 3 rocks, they collect an actual rock or small pebble. The first player to collect 10 rocks wins! This game is fun enough to be memorable and will help students remember the stages of the rock cycle while solidifying their conceptual understanding of how rocks are cycled by the Earth, constantly changing between sedimentar
