Being mindful of thoughts is a skill from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).  The strategies were adapted from Distress Tolerance in Marsha Linehan’s DBT Skills Training Manual. DBT teaches  observing thoughts instead of fusing with them or believing that we are our thoughts. Approaching our thoughts mindfully demonstrates that they are not catastrophic. They are just thoughts. Change the relationship you have with your thoughts. It’s the path to freedom.
