Drawing of European Street
European streets were designed for people to walk around them. The twists and turns on the streets create a walkable environment with different spaces around each bend. Pedestrians feel protected from their rear, and are encouraged to discover the next space in front of them.
Shared Parkway Design
As designers rethink the city and the way people use the space around them new styles of public space have emerged. Green spaces that pedestrians can walk through become both means of egress and public parks, making the most of a single space.
Leicester shared space
The normal US street is a collection of segregated zones, one for each type of user. Shared roads eliminate that segregation and provide more space to bikers and pedestrians that are usually pushed to the outside. Also the elimination of a designated car lane forces drivers to be more careful, again making it safer for pedestrians.
The Pedestrians First Plan
In order for residents to feel like they are a part of their neighborhood they need to be able to enjoy walking around their city. In order to encourage that pedestrian traffic the city streets need to be properly designed to accommodate foot traffic and ensure pedestrian safety.
Lathrop Homes redevelopment
Redevelopments like Lathrop Homes on the north side of the Chicago River can, if done properly, create a unique area of the city that people of all walks of life can enjoy. The low rise, mixed income development is meant to revitalize the river front, and transform an abandoned area of the city into a vibrant community center.
Making High Density Highly Livable
Dynamic Personalization creates the opportunity for users to imprint themselves on their space. It could be the future of Urbanization because it gives residents a place that can be completely theirs within a city where places to be alone can be hard to find.
The Future of Tiny Housing
Recent Innovations in small space living has made it possible for lower income families to live in more desirable areas. Precast construction and passive designs help to lower the overall costs of apartments, creating a new opportunity for poos residents of the city.
Infrastructure in New York
Robert Moses may not have accomplished his entire view of New York City, but his influence is undeniable. The big infrastructure projects that move millions of people every day make the city functional, but are they the only answer to that problem? Are there other ways we could accomplish the same task that are more sustainable? It is our job as designers to ask that question and look for new answers.
East River Redesign
In New York there has always been an ongoing search for ways to improve the city for it's residents. One of the new plans in Brooklyn is to reform the old packaging district near the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. This project looks to make a usable public space that re-purposes parts of the city and revitalize the neighborhoods around it.
Greenacre Park: A New York Gem
Greenacre Park is a small, but popular park in New York City. The open space surrounded by tall trees and bushes makes users feel safe, and protected from the hustle and bustle of the city. The calming water feature blocks the noises of the city. It works because it uses some key elements of good public space design, like movable chairs, but it also works because it is unique. It's an oasis within the city.
New New York - Futurama
In the fictional show Futurama New York has been completely rebuilt. The inventions of the future create whole new opportunities of ways to design cities. The show may be a joke, but the idea it raises is very real. We should be designing for the possible, but always think about what may be possible in the future.
Sidewalk Labs: Google’s Guinea-Pig City in Toronto
In order to redefine the way our density is distributed we need to rethink our cities. Projects that integrate living, working, and entertainment can not only make a more sustainable city, but they also create a cohesive community that encourages people to live and spend locally.
Qld gov't commits to ‘low-density’ masterplan
Low rise, walkable cities create a feeling of comfort for the residents, but aren't always accessible to large numbers of people. By adding large towers within the low rise community the density can be greatly increased while the feeling of the neighborhood stays intact. The Queensland government has committed to a plan to do just this.
The Cost of Sprawl
As our cities shrink and our suburbs grow the cost to each individual and the strain on our resources. We already live beyond our global means and if we continue to live in spread out, low density areas, the problem will continue to grow.
Catastrophes in Slums
Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, leaving thousands of American citizens living without power or clean water. If we as the richest country on the planet can't take care of our citizens that live in slums then how can we expect countries with less resources to try?
