1. On India's 72nd Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the long-awaited manned space mission by India, for which space agency ISRO has been prepping. By 2022, "a son or daughter of India will go to space with a tricolor in hand," PM Modi said; 2. The other big announcement was the rollout of the world's largest government-funded health care programme -- the Ayushman Bharat, which would benefit 50 crore people; 3. Focusing on the achievements of his government in his fifth and final address from the ramparts of the Red Fort before next year's elections, PM Modi said, "We can take tough decisions because nation's interest is first for us, not the party's"; 4. Modi began by congratulating the all-women INS Tarini team for circumnavigating the globe and paying tribute to freedom fighters and the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre; ;5. He said the recently concluded monsoon session of Parliament focused on social justice; 6. Taking a jibe at the UPA government, Modi also added that the pace of development fast-tracked in the past four years; 7. Modi also announced the much demanded permanent commission for women in armed forces; 8. So far women were given short service commission in Army, Navy and Air Force.
