2000s

For those who were born in the 90s and were kids and teens in the 2000's, you know it didn't look like all these way better looking yk2 stuff that 2000s babies seem to think it was. This applies to myself too so no offense, and not all of it was that bad, but basically if it didn't look a bit ugly and cringe it probably wasn't actually something that was worn in the 2000's. While grunge was particularly big in the 90s, it went away for a bit and made a come back later on around the 2010's, meanwhile the 2000's equivalents were more goth, emo, scene and 'kandi', and specifically seemed to branch out in that order. There seemed to be some crossover with some of the early 2000s tomboy, skater-girl, punk-rocker-girl and not-like-the-other-girls-esc aesthetics and some of the above mentioned subgenres of aesthetics stemming out of goth, emo, and general alternative fashion, the yk2 aesthetic teens today might dress up as for 2000s themed parties might have at least some resemblance to trends worn in the 2000s, however clearly distinct as 2020s (as it actually looks good lol), but I think only thinking of that when it comes to the 2000s is barely scratching the surface, as that's just one flavour of taste of the time, but quite a lot of the youth didn't want to be mainstream, we wanted to be different, go against the grain, hence the rise of the "quirky and random" type of thing going on in some of these outer branches of alt fashion and communities; being weird and nerdy and different was being considered more desirable by quite a lot of youth, rejecting former more popular high school jock and cheerleader type, unfortunately a lot of this was intertwined with misogyny, leading a lot of girls to "hate the colour pink", performatively adopt more percieved masculine tastes and interests or at least not wanting to be a girly-girl- to clarify a lot of this was also authentic and girls wanting more freedom of expression and to be a different kind of girl and feel empowered in that, but the element of putting down girls to put yourself above them was there and can be seen on old not like the other girls tumblr posts floating around the web today. (Being different is fine but we don't need to shit on others at the same time). Internalized misogyny's influences can also be seen in media and pop culture, looking at the video and lyrics of songs like Most Girls by P!nk and You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift, even in an old favourite like Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne. Scene and kandi aesthetics seemed to be influenced by the developing internet culture and early online graphics, particularly things like MySpace, HotMail and YouTube. The early 2000s did have some of what yk2 aesthetics portrayed with more hyper feminine, bubblegum and glamorous looks, and there was also a lot of weird experimentation, combinations and trends; big hoop earrings, mini skirts, strappy high heels, graphic caps, baker boy caps and newsboy caps, fedoras, bedazzled everything, bangles or chunky bracelets, low waist pants, skirts, dresses and chunky belts.
